Google -- Talk Is Cheap

By: Steve Bralovich

Google Talk lays the groundwork for Google to move beyond the Internet and onto the telephone network. Google Talk can handle only PC-to-PC voice calls, but if it added the functions of an Internet telephony company such as Skype Technologies SA--by acquisition, partnership, or in-house development--it could quickly let Internet callers reach beyond computers to telephones. (continued...)

Google Talk has couple of neat features that you might expect. It includes a Google IM so you can chat with your contacts via email.

It also has a GMail notifier for your GMail account. I find this handy because I use GMail for some everday needs. You are given a link to sign up with if you don't have a GMail account yet.

It's still a beta but you should check it out. Especially if you and your contacts are on GMail.
